UN: Kallas, “Peace and security are in decline; it’s the only system that defends international law.”

“UN is the only international system that stands for peace, represents the global collective interest, and protects international law” said the High Representative of the European Commission’s Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, during the Security Council session on EU-UN cooperation in New York.

Speaking on the necessity of multilateral cooperation, Kallas warned that the world is witnessing the “gravest violation and breakdown of international law since the Second World War“. Two are the preeminent global crises: Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. This is why she reaffirmed that the European Union’s support for the UN is now “more vital than ever” to safeguard the only system capable of defending international law.
