“The possibility of engaging the International Olive Coincil has been confirmed, which provides an opportunity to safeguard the quality of extra virgin olive oil. These measures must continue to guarantee the right to reciprocity, which we strongly emphasize in the work we are carrying out in the Committee on the Environment and Public Health to combat fraud. Apulian olive oil accounts for one-third of Italian production, so this regulation particularly concerns Puglia. Combating the trade in, for example, Tunisian olive oil—which is of poor quality and fails to meet the standards we demand of our farmers—is a path we are pursuing to ensure Italian excellence.” This was stated by Fratelli d’Italia MEP Michele Picaro in an interview on the sidelines of the plenary session at the European Parliament in Strasbourg regarding the vote on updating the international agreement on olive oil.
