“There’s only one thing to say: everyone needs to apologize to Ranucci, who’s been criticized for everything. The problem is how he’s been treated in Italy. We have a problem with press freedom. Personally, I think journalists should turn their backs on publishers who don’t grant them freedom. Now, not everyone can afford to do that, but I, too, was a hothead when I was young. This applies to both the right and the left. Press freedom must reassure everyone. Journalists must fight back every day and give a little nudge every day. And if necessary, even much more.” So said Lucia Annunziata, a Member of the European Parliament from the Democratic Party, in an interview at the European Parliament in Brussels, commenting on the news of the arrest of four people accused of carrying out the contract killing of journalist Sigfrido Ranucci in Pomezia, in the province of Rome, on October 16, 2025.
