“Wine is culture, it is the land, and it is a fundamental part of our civilisation and our sense of community,” said Carlo Fidanza, MEP for Ecr, during Vinitaly 2026, the 58th international wine and spirits fair, in Verona.
As part of Vinitaly, the ECR delegation organised an event entitled “From the ‘Wine Package’ to new trade agreements: a European perspective”, focusing on the future of the European wine sector, with particular attention to the measures contained in the “Wine Package” and the regulatory and market challenges that remain to be addressed.
Carlo Fidanza, described the Wine Package as “a virtuous example of Europe” capable of listening to the productive sectors and taking action on promotion, wine tourism and bureaucratic simplification.
Regarding the labelling proposals, Fidanza stated that we must “defend the wine sector from a new ideological attack, with extreme and threatening health warnings on labels”. He also reiterated the need to distinguish between abuse and responsible consumption, emphasising that “there is a big difference between the abuse of wine and mindful consumption”.
