“15% more renewables in the first quarter than in 2025,” European Competition Commissioner Teresa Ribera said at a press conference held at the Berlaymont building. The Commissioner went on to say that the energy transition is not just an environmental choice, but a cornerstone of our economic security and sovereignty. With the Accelerate EU plan, Europe reiterates a clear concept: investing in clean, in-house produced solutions —from electrification to efficiency— is the only way to reduce vulnerabilities and gain freedom. “The numbers prove us right: in the first quarter of 2026, renewable energy production set a new record, surpassing last year’s results by 15%. We’re not just changing the energy system; we’re protecting citizens and businesses from future price shocks by focusing on resilient and competitive growth.” Ribera continued in this way, emphasizing the importance of energy security in a world at the mercy of crises.
