“The European regulation on artificial intelligence was a cutting-edge choice for Europe that now many countries around the world, many parts of the world are copying us. But we wanted to be a bit of a vanguard, a more advanced front, because we said, for example, that we in Europe do not want some uses of artificial intelligence that have a particular impact on freedom. “ These are the words of Brando Benifei, MEP of the Socialists and Democrats group, rapporteur of the European AI Act and negotiator for the Socialists and Democrats of the “Digital Omnibus”. Benifei explains the different consumer protection choices in simple terms: “We limited the use of biometric recognition cameras, we banned their use to control emotions in the workplace and studio, we banned Chinese-style social scoring, and then we worked to ensure there were tools to control what is displayed through generative AI.”
